General Search Principles
- Case sensitivity does not matter
- It is not necessary to use diacritics or punctuation
Before starting to search for a document, we recommend first selecting which department or type of documents you want to search in (e.g., "books only," "in the music department," etc.).

Enter the search terms into the input field and select the type of data you are searching for (Author / Title / Subject).

The "All" option below the search input field allows you to search records by any field (e.g., publisher, place of publication, year of publication, etc.).
If you do not know the exact name of the author, you can use the author index from the top menu of the online catalog, where the entries are sorted alphabetically. The subject index includes subject headings as well as keywords.
Clicking the Search button will make the catalog select all records that match the specified conditions. The retrieved records are sorted by relevance to the search query, meaning the more a record matches the specified values, the higher it is ranked. The retrieved records can be sorted by author, full title, date of publication, etc.
If a large number of records are found, you can narrow down the results using facets in the right column of the online catalog. The catalog categorizes the retrieved records by certain criteria (author, document type, keywords, year of publication, etc.) and displays the number of matching records. By selecting a specific author or another criterion, you refine your query. Selected facets limiting the search results are displayed at the top right above all available facets.

You can return to the search results overview from the document detail using the Back button in your browser or by using the breadcrumb navigation.
Volume Overview
The volume overview is displayed below the document detail. In the volume overview, you can see where the individual volumes are located in the library and where you can borrow the specific document.

Obtaining a Document
In the catalog, you have the option to order a book for yourself in several ways (depending on the library's offerings). You can reserve a borrowed book. An available book can be set aside or ordered from the storage area if it is located there. All options are displayed after clicking the "Get" button.

Some functions of the online catalog are only available to registered users (e.g., reservations, loan extensions, discussions, etc.). You can log into your reader account at the top right of the main menu of the online catalog by entering your library card number and PIN (typically the first six characters of your birth number).
